Edit Work: 5 fields + Complete / Restore (no editable phase field)

Last updated June 2, 2026 · 5 min read

A book isn't locked in after creation — you can change the title, type, description, and goal. Slima has no manually-editable "Planning / Draft / Editing / Done" 4-stage field; a book's state is just a binary in-progress / complete toggle (via the ⋯ menu). (The editor breadcrumb does show an auto-inferred writing-phase indicator — Drafting / Revising / Polishing — but it isn't editable.) This article covers the Edit Work modal's five fields + the complete / restore mechanic.

Edit Work modal with 5 fields: Title / Genre (Fiction / Biography / Business / Technical / Self-Help / General — 6 chips) / Description / Target Words / Target Date

Open the Edit Work dialog

Shelf card → hover → top-right ⋯ menu → Edit.

The five editable fields

1 · Title

Most-edited field. Updates everywhere it appears:

  • Shelf card
  • Editor header
  • Export filename

2 · Genre

Six chips: Fiction / Biography / Business / Technical / Self-Help / General.

⚠️ Changing the genre does not reorganise existing folders — it only affects:

  • AI Coach default analysis lens
  • Export template selection

See: Six book types and folder templates

3 · Description

A sentence or two. The AI Coach reads it and uses it to anchor its overall understanding.

E.g. "A novella about memory and solitude."

It's also used as metadata when you export to EPUB / Word.

4 · Target Words (Goal Settings)

Optional. See Set writing goals.

Once set:

  • Shelf card shows a progress bar (e.g. "Manuscript 72 / 80.0K words · 0%")
  • Writing Stats "Overview" includes this book in totals
  • Writing Stats "Estimated Completion (ETA)" computes against your rolling 7-day average

5 · Target Date (Goal Settings)

Optional — your target completion date.

The Writing Stats page uses it to determine whether you're ahead / on track / behind.

Complete (= Archive) / restore (no editable 4-stage field)

Slima has no manually-switchable "Planning / Draft / Editing / Done" 4-stage tag — a book's state is just an in-progress / complete binary. (The editor breadcrumb does show an auto-inferred writing phase — Drafting / Revising / Polishing — but the system derives it from your progress; you can't set it by hand.) The "Mark as Complete" item in a book's ⋯ menu is the archive action — it marks the book complete and moves it to the "Archive" tab:

Action How Effect
Mark as Complete My Works book ⋯ → "Mark as Complete" Book is tagged "Completed" + moves to the "Archive" tab (leaves "My Works")
Restore Archive tab → card ⋯ → "Restart Editing" Moves back to "My Works" to keep writing

To take a book off the shelf entirely, use Delete (moves to Trash, recoverable for 60 days) — see Book lifecycle.

You won't lose anything

  • Title / description / genre — edits update the book metadata directly
  • Goal / complete marker — instant

For tracking chapter-content versions over time, see Version history (a separate versioning system, not tied to book metadata).

Fields that don't exist (despite older docs)

Earlier versions of this article mentioned the following — they're not in the current modal:

  • ❌ Cover image upload — no such field currently
  • ❌ Editable 4-stage field (Planning / Draft / Editing / Done) — no such field in the modal; a book's state is only an In Progress / Complete binary (the editor breadcrumb does show an auto-inferred Drafting / Revising / Polishing indicator, but it isn't editable)
  • ❌ ⚙️ icon inside the editor to open this dialog — the entry point is the shelf ⋯ menu
