Motivation onboarding: the 4-step habit wizard (not 5)

4 min read

The article slug says "five steps," but Slima's actual "Set Up My Writing Habit" wizard is 4 steps. This article uses the real UI structure and notes which planned 5-step parts didn't ship.

Your Writing Tree detail — the state you reach after the 4-step wizard (Seed · Day 1 + encouragement + Getting Started 3/6)

How to reach the wizard

Enter Writing Studio → top-right motivation widget on the bookshelf → click "Set Up My Writing Habit".

If you skipped earlier, the button is always there in the top-right — re-run any time.

The real 4-step flow

Step 1 · Identity question

"What kind of creator do you want to be in Slima?"

Four options:

  • I want to finish my first book
  • I want to write every day as a habit
  • I want to write something publishable
  • Custom (type your own)

Purpose: pick an identity, not a numeric goal. The motivation system tunes encouragement around this.

Step 2 · Daily writing pledge

"The most important thing for finishing a book isn't inspiration — it's writing every day. Slima will help you build that habit."

"Will you start by writing one sentence a day?"

Two buttons:

  • I will (recommended)
  • Skip for now

Design intent: not "write 500 words daily" — the minimum unit is "one sentence a day" so anyone can clear it.

Step 3 · Habit cue

"What time do you plan to write each day?"

  • Time picker (e.g. 8:30 AM)

"What do you usually do right before that?"

Four options:

  • After my morning coffee
  • After getting home from work
  • After the kids are asleep
  • Custom

Purpose: anchor "writing" right after a habit you already have. Classic habit stacking.

Step 4 · Seed metaphor / completion

"You've planted a seed. From tomorrow, writing every day waters it."

Click "Write the first sentence" to finish.

Back on the bookshelf, the Your Writing Tree detail will show "Seed · Day 1" with the matching encouragement line.

What the old "5 steps" plan got vs what shipped

There was a planned 5-step flow named Seed / Identity Goal / Commitment / Schedule / HabitPlant. The current UI ships only the 4 steps above:

Planned 5-step Shipped UI
Seed (what you want to write) ❌ not shipped — Step 1 identity covers it
Identity Goal ✅ Step 1
Commitment (days per week) ❌ not shipped — Step 2 "one sentence a day" pledge instead
Schedule (time of day) ✅ Step 3 (top half — the time picker)
HabitPlant metaphor ✅ Step 4 (the seed)

To change commitment or time later, re-run the 4-step wizard — there's no separate settings page yet.

What if I skip?

Totally fine. After skipping:

  • The tree defaults to Seed state
  • Streak counts from your first writing day
  • The motivation widget keeps "Set Up My Writing Habit" available (always re-runnable)
