Slash command palette (/): insert elements / characters / locations

In the screenplay's Write view, type / on an empty line to bring up the slash command palette — quickly insert script elements, characters, and locations without memorising every shortcut.

Script Studio Write editor: type / on an empty line to open the slash command palette and insert elements

How to open

In the Write view, type / at the start of an empty line → a palette appears in the centre. Typing filters it fuzzily in real time.

What it inserts

The palette is grouped:

Element types

  • Action / description (Ctrl 1)
  • Character (Ctrl 2)
  • Dialogue (Ctrl 3)
  • Parenthetical (Ctrl 4)
  • Shot (Ctrl 5)

Pick one → the current line becomes that element type.

Characters

Characters you've created in the Character Bible are listed (with dialogue-line counts) → pick one to drop in the character name and start a dialogue.

Locations

Locations you've created are listed (with INT / EXT marks) → pick one to insert it as a scene heading.

Tools

  • New scene (Ctrl⇧N)

Keyboard navigation

  • / to move
  • Enter to run / insert
  • Esc to close

Fuzzy matching

Type a few letters to filter — e.g. "dia" matches "Dialogue," part of a character name matches that character.

Relationship to element shortcuts

Each element type also has a direct shortcut (Action Ctrl 1, Character Ctrl 2, Dialogue Ctrl 3…). The / slash palette is handy when you can't recall a shortcut or want to drop in a character / location. See Smart Enter / Tab element flow.
