Pacing diagnostic
Last updated June 10, 2026 · 2 min read
Off pacing = mid-book drops. The pacing diagnostic quantifies it.

Sub-scores
The Pacing diagnostic has two sub-scores:
| Sub-score | Examines |
|---|---|
| Overall | Is the overall pace right — does it drag or rush |
| Ending | Does this passage land cleanly and leave momentum to read on |
Each reader gives a pacing score (0-10) plus a one-line take.
Read it with the attention curve
The report's Overview has an attention curve: paragraphs (§1, §2…) on the x-axis, reader engagement on the y-axis. The steep-drop paragraphs are where pacing breaks and readers start to drift — best read alongside the pacing score.
Two common failure modes
| Issue | What |
|---|---|
| Drag | Multiple passages repeat similar content, no advance |
| Rush | Major events handled too fast; readers can't follow |
What the report gives you
- Each reader's pacing score and comment
- AI cites passages flagging where it drags / rushes
- The Editor detail tab's "Pacing & Tension" dimension has more granular suggestions
